Jon:
And tonight's guest. She's been in Cruel Intentions. And she's also
been in I Know What You Did Last Summer. She's very popular, But she's
best known for her role on the WB's Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
(clip from "The Freshman")
Jon: I like to play. Please welcome Sarah Michelle Gellar
Sarah: this is for short people (sits in the short couch) It's
all about short people
Jon: Watch this (lowers his chair). huh? match me.
Sarah: That's excellent.
Jon: how are you doing?
Sarah: I'm very well, Thank you. How are you?
Jon: you gotta be exausted. You're flying around you're killing
the vampires and you're making the movies. Then you're in New York You
went to the SNL party. The 25th anniversary.
Sarah: yes i did. It was absolutely incredible.
Jon: good times.
Sarah: It was awe inspiring to see all those people. Of course
I insulted everyone there by constantly saying "It's so amazing the
show has been on longer than i've been alive." Just not the thing to
say to some of these guys.
Jon: Yeah. It's always what akroyd wants to hear.
Sarah: yeah. yeah.
Jon: Was it fun? Cause i live in New York and i know some of
the guys up there and i heard it was an awesome party.
(laughter from audience)
Sarah: I was wondering where you were.
Jon: No it was interesting. Woo taxi right away. uh you know...so
close yet so far. So you did you...Did you see anybody you really admired?
Sarah: It was just wonderful to see Dan akroyd and Bill Murray
and those guys. Lorrane Newman and Lovits and Victoria Ja--
Jon: still alive walking. you know what i mean?
Sarah: that was Gary Busey (sp?)
Jon: Gary..haha. was he there? Was he hanging out?
(sarah nods and smiles)
Jon: You by the way, this whole teen explosion, if i my coin
my own phrase. Uh...
Sarah: it's original
Jon: Thank you.
(laughs)
Jon: I know the advertisers like it so i'm flipping through
The New York times magazine because i thought they had a jumble. But
they don't. And um...(audience laughs) But they had an article, i guess
about teen actors and things like that. And YOU got a letter in.
Sarah: I did
Jon: You had a retort. You had an editorial in.
Sarah: I did. yeah I did and it was so odd to see "Sarah Michelle
Gellar--Hollywood, CA. I still think i'm a New Yorker. It took me longer
to believe..."is that me? Oh that's me".
Jon: did you actually right this?
Sarah: I did actually. I read this article and it was just...it's
just insensed me. It was basically this story about perception of young
Hollywood. That's been around forever and truthfully doesn't really
exist that much anymore. It's just a small population. Right now the
young actors that are working are very hard working and they're very
serious professionals. And this article is just another one of these,
you know...
Jon: i don't know what you're talking about.
(laughter)
Jon: Here's the thing that i'm curious about, i thought these
were all fake (talking about the letters in the NY times magazine) like
penthouse. These are all real?
(laughter)
Jon: you wrote this...
Sarah: When i wrote my letter to penthouse they printed that
too and
Jon: are you serious?
Sarah: no not a bit, but um there i wrote a whole letter and
i was so proud and I brought it in to Joss Whedon our writer and had
him rewrite it and I got my own letter in the New York times and i wrote
it completely myself.
Jon: So you felt like...Here's the basic issue, you felt like
the NY times was saying young actors are just lusting after the fame
and not working on there craft and you're saying not true at all. We're
very well grounded
Sarah: I'm not saying it's not true at all. It certainly exists
I mean...
(audience member says something)
Sarah: thank you.
Jon: so we're backing paragraph two.
(laughter) (sarah looks over at the papter jon's holding)
Jon: no i'm just kidding.
Sarah: But but we read articles like this you think that it's
the only culture that exists in LA and it's so not the case. And I'm
just tired of hearing that same story.
Jon: I've been to LA and i don't think culture exist there at
all. It's certain like...
(laughter)
Sarah: Well you should look in my refridgerator.
Jon: exactly
Sarah: There's lots of culture there.
Jon: We got some serious here though...but but the thing i wonder
about it is, it's interesting that the Times would do an article criticizing
teens but they put teens on their cover to sell the..uh there magazine.
Which seems uh..i'm working on my own letter...(writes something down)
(laughter)
Sarah: I'll read it over later
Jon: you know what's funny is that you're letter it's very articulate
and it's very long and the other ones where like "I dig Reese Witherspoon"
you know what i mean so it's...
(laughs)
Sarah: I wrote the other letters too
Jon: oh Did you...
Sarah: to make myself seem much more intelligent...did it work?
Jon: it absolutely works. And maybe next time when you come
back, you'll probably come back to host SNL, I would think, cause you've
done it alreadly like twice?
Sarah: twice
Jon: you'll probably come back again and then you...can probably...on
the party afterwards uh get to make up your own list i would think
(laughter from audience)
(sarah goes along with it)
Sarah: Sometimes.
Jon: Right
Sarah: Do you know anyone who would want to go?
(Jon pretends to be sad)
Jon: That's cool you know. I got friends at nickelodeon. I get
all the Rugrats stuff.
(laughter)
Jon: I'm not worried about anything---I just want to thank you
very much for coming by and I hope you come see us again. Buffy the
vampire Slayer airs on Tuesdays on the WB. Sarah Michelle--
(audience member says something)
Jon: what?
(laugh from Sarah)
Jon: Sarah Michelle Gellar ladies and gentlemen!
